    Крупнейшая публичная библиотека [ public library] страны. Основана в 1895. Фактически - комплекс научных библиотек, финансируемых благотворительными организациями, и сеть из 83 публичных филиалов, находящихся на бюджете города. Совокупный 35-миллионный фонд доступен в центральной библиотеке и через любой из филиалов. Создан электронный каталог на все поступления после 1972. Среди специализированных коллекций: фонд редких книг, фонд эстампов (около 6 млн. единиц хранения), рукописи, кинофильмы, видео- и фонозаписи, крупная коллекция почтовых марок США. Находится на пересечении Пятой авеню [ Fifth Avenue] и 42-й улицы [ 42nd Street]. В центральной библиотеке и филиалах часто организуются выставки. Главное здание знаменито скульптурами львов при входе, ставшими своеобразным символом библиотеки. Филиалом Библиотеки является исследовательский Центр сценических искусств при Линкольновском центре [ Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts]. Издает популярный настольный справочник [New York Public Library Desk Reference]
